Health: Dangers Of Skipping Breakfast

It has been sung countless times; breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Though a large number of people agree to this fact, not many keep up with it. With the increasingly time-demanding lifestyle we lead, taking time out to eat breakfast is a luxury most people think they cannot afford. For this category of people, brunch at 12 noon or sometimes, outright skipping of breakfast is the norm.
While some attribute busy schedules to the reason for their missing breakfast, others assume skipping breakfast might help cut down their calorie intake and subsequently, help them lose weight. Interestingly, this is an assumption which studies have now proven to be, in fact, the other way around. There are increasing pointers to the fact that eating or skipping breakfast can have a tremendous effect on one’s overall health including one’s exposure to certain diseases and conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular problems. So, what makes breakfast so important?

Slows metabolism
To begin with, Mrs. Ebere Okafor, a nutritionist and wellness professional, says breakfast prepares the body for the tasks for the day. “Breakfast kicks off the body’s metabolism. When we sleep, the entire body’s metabolic activities slow down, so, when we wake, the easiest and most natural way to get it all started is to
feed the body with food. This would signal the brain to wake up every other part of the body and begin metabolism. The system works like a car. If the hand brakes are engaged, the car struggles to move. But when it is disengaged, there is smooth movement. When you skip breakfast, it is likened to a car on brake. It slows down the body’s metabolism and this would affect the amount of calories you burn, eventually leading to weight gain,” she says.

Weight gain
Experts have stated that those who skip breakfast tend to either eat more food than usual when they have their next meal or nibble on high-calorie snacks to stave off hunger, all of which can contribute to weight gain. So, the idea of not eating breakfast to induce weight loss becomes counterproductive because the individual ends up eating more, only at a later period.
Interestingly, not only is it important to eat breakfast, but a healthy, high-calorie diet for breakfast has added advantages as regards weight loss. One study published in the August 2013 edition of the journal, Obesity, on “High Caloric intake at breakfast vs. dinner differentially influences weight loss of overweight and obese women” showed that those who eat their largest daily meal at breakfast are far more likely to lose weight and waist line circumference than those who eat a large dinner.

Memory
If you have an early morning test, it is advised that eating breakfast may help with memory and cognitive functions. Research conducted by the University of Toronto and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that eating a carbohydrate-rich breakfast increased performance on short and long-term memory tests among participants. There have been other studies corroborating this fact and a 2005 Journal of the American Dietetic Association review of 47 breakfast-related studies, found that, indeed, eating breakfast is likely to improve cognitive function related to memory and test grades.

Diabetes
Skipping breakfast has also been shown to effect an increase in women’s diabetes risk. In the study published in Obesity, it was discovered that participants who ate a larger breakfast – which included a dessert item such as a piece of chocolate cake or a cookie – also had significantly lower levels of insulin, glucose, and triglycerides throughout the day, translating into a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
Another study published the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that women who ate breakfast an average of zero to six times per week were at a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes than women who ate breakfast every day.

Affects mood
It is usually said that “a hungry man is an angry man.” This aphorism is not far from the truth and studies have shown that skipping breakfast can have a huge effect on one’s moods. It has been proven that people who tend to skip breakfast are more irritable and grouchy.

Heart disease
Besides exercise and healthy eating for optimum heart health, the decision to make a habit of either eating or skipping breakfast can affect one’s chances of having heart problems. A 16-year study of 26,902 males on their eating habits and their risk of developing coronary heart disease found that men who reported skipping breakfast had a 27 per cent higher risk of coronary heart disease than men who ate breakfast. The study, which was published in the journal Circulation, showed that those of the participants who didn’t eat breakfast were generally hungrier later in the day and ate more food at night, leading to metabolic changes and heart disease.

FROM CHILDBRIDE ABUSE TO ARMED ROBBERY? Police Arraign Senator Yerima On Criminal Charges, Conspiracy To Commit Armed Robbery

The police in Zamfara State at the weekend filed criminal charges against Senator Yerima Bakura and 29 others at a Zamfara High Court over alleged conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that counsel to the police, Oloye Torugbene, sought the leave of the court to prosecute the case, pursuant to the Criminal Procedure.
He told the court that all relevant documents, including affidavits, exhibits, names and addresses of accused persons, as well as written statements of witnesses and the accused persons, had been submitted to the court.
He, therefore, urged the court to proffer a criminal charge based on the evidence provided for prosecution.
He said, already, the accused persons who had been served arraignment notice, were released through police administrative bail and pleaded with the court to fix a date for hearing.
The Chief Judge of the state, Justice Kulu Aliyu, said in a ruling that the court was competent to handle the case.

Aliyu urged the prosecutor to serve the accused persons with all the relevant documents and fixed Jan. 13, 2014 for hearing.
The member of the House of Representatives from Gusau/Tsafe,Alhaji Ibrahim Shehu, had, in June, alleged that some people mobilised some thugs to kill him.
He alleged that during the incident, the attackers removed large sum of money from his vehicle.
He reported the case to the Inspector-General of Police, who set up an investigation that led to the court case.

She's Hit a Jackpot: Cheryl Cole Wins Court Battle With X-Factor; Takes Home £1.4million!

She Don Hammer: Cheryl Cole Wins Court Battle With X-Factor; Takes Home £1.4million

Cheryl Cole has come out victorious in her court battle with X-Factor, and has reportedly earned a lot of money as spoils.
The former Girls Aloud star took the show’s producer Blue Orbit to court after she was sacked from the programme after just three weeks on the judging panel. And while the amount of money received has not been confirmed, the initial lawsuit stated that she was owed £1.4million.
Speaking to The Metro, a source said: “It was about the production company and the contract they signed. This was the final sticking point and mean everything has been resolved. She’s been paid.”
The 11-page lawsuit filed at the time said that although she was paid £1.1million salary for season now, she was still owed £1.25million for the show’s second season plus a £62,000 wardrobe allowance, a £15,500 stylist allowance, a £9,300-a-month living allowance and £1,550-a-month living expenses. She has also requested that Blue Orbit productions should reimburse the cost of bodyguards and the first-class flights she took to Los Angeles as well as flights for members of her entourage.
Cheryl was initially left furious when she was sacked from the show, after US viewers reportedly struggled to understand her Geordie accent.

EXCLUSIVE: TB Joshua On President Jonathan, God's Talking To Him, Private Jets, Going To Restroom ... And Many More!

photo - TB Jonshua On President Jonathan, God's Talking To Him, Private Jets, Going To Restroom ... And Many More

Prophet Temitope Balogun Joshua of the Synagogue Church of all Nations opens up on multiple controversies surrounding him and his ministry:

On being humble:  If you have passed through what I have passed through, you will even be more humble than I am.
I have good health, and God shows me what I would have been in terms of sickness and death; it humbles me, and I want to use my good health for him. At times, God shows me how people are suffering and the thought that it could have been me keeps me humble. For instance, if I did anything wrong during this interview, when you may have left, God will caution me. If I am not humble, I will be out of track. If I was not in the house of God, I would be one of the touts in the motor parks.

On his ministry being seemingly more popular outside Nigeria than in Nigeria: I want to offer the same prayer for you: that God should make you more popular outside your country than in your country.
Let other countries introduce you to your country. I think that is better. As it is written in the Bible, a prophet
has no honour in his country. I am not an evangelist or a pastor, I am a prophet. It is the word prophet that was used in that scriptural passage, not evangelist or so. If my people had understood the work from the beginning, it could have affected the glory of God in my life today. If people understand your vision from the beginning, you may not go far. It is better they don’t, they will understand later, and by then, you would have been very strong and God would have strengthened your desire. Praises and adoration can make you a local champion.
Where are the people that Nigerians praised from the beginning? I can mention some – even men of God, who are no longer living today, so many founders – CAC, Cherubim and Seraphim, Church of the Lord and so on. We should get this understanding that those who were local champions in the past did not reach international recognition.
Look beyond the ministry job to the secular world, was it Nigeria that introduced Prof. Wole Soyinka to the world? But when he became a Nobel Laureate, he became more powerful; when he talks, everyone wants to listen. Whereas there were some other local champions that even when they were dying, nobody took their news to CNN. They don’t know them.
God has a way of raising people by throwing the image to the international community. Even the footballers that are notable became acceptable to Nigerians when they belong to international clubs. I may not be accepted by some people in Nigeria but my acceptance in the world has been announcing me to my world. When you look at the people working with me, you see that the ratio of Nigerians working with me are not more than 10 per cent.

On special attraction that brings heads of government to synagogue: You have said it all, where there is demand, there is supply, and in that place, there would be enough anointing to do the work. God will not allow people to go to a place where there is no supply. It is not possible. I observe that if three chairs are added to this church today, you suddenly find people filling it and if four are removed, it is just the number of people that will fill the chairs that will come.
I have studied that from the beginning. Sometimes, when I see some ministries printing handbills, using signboards to advertise the church, I say those things are not necessary. God is the one inviting people, if you allow him to do it, the solution to their problems will be waiting for them. But if you take it upon yourself to do the advertisement, people that God is not expecting will come along with them and there will be crisis and trouble.
You just continue doing your work and leave the advert for God, then those that God didn’t invite will not come and there will be peace and tranquillity. You should not go out to start saying ‘I can heal, I can deliver.’ At synagogue, our critics are our advertisement. They are people that don’t want to hear about us. They tell other people that ‘that church is devilish;’ unknowingly, some of the people they tell get inquisitive and they will want to come here and see what a devil looks like since they haven’t seen one before.
God has been using this as advertisement for us. Ninety per cent of people who come here do so in the bid to come and verify what they had heard about this church. When some of them get here, they will sit at the back, fearing that they could be hurt. Some put on dark glasses or disguise in a way that will not allow people that know them to recognise them. But before the service is over, some of them will pick up their bags and move to the front seats. They eventually become my prayer warriors.
Let me tell you something that amazes me and that I always thank God for – those who are with me are more than those that are against me. They keep supporting me all over the world. I have more, more, more people around the world. Whenever I say this, tears flow from my eyes (sobs for a while). These are tears of joy. I get so sad when I hear people’s confession when their eyes become open to what God is doing here. Some say, "I wish I had known this, my mum would not have died. She asked me to bring her here but because of what I was hearing about this place, I refused until she died. I hope that she will forgive me."

On President Goodluck Jonathan's involvement: When it comes to relationship, I think he would be in the best position to answer that question. Since what we are doing is creating impact around the world, you should expect Nigeria’s president to also be part of it. We are praying for the nation and being a Christian acknowledges it.
If Jonathan had been here, it would have been shown on our Emmanuel Television network. No president has ever visited this place in secret. The Bible says that if you confess me before men, I will confess you before my father in heaven. I am not a witch doctor; we have nothing to hide. If you have not read in the newspapers that your president came here, then that is that.
Anytime presidents of other countries come here, Jonathan is usually aware. If he doesn’t believe in what we are doing, he would have told them that we constitute security risks.

On "instructing" the nation: I say it on the television and all over the world. I accept that is not enough; it is better to see him one on one.
But what is the essence of a President's visit if he won't follow what I will tell him? This kind of trend keeps staining my name. I will not mention anybody, when they leave here; they do not obey the instructions.

What are presidents looking for in the church: The reason why people visit a man of God is to receive instructions, his opinion about them or their country. But if they don’t follow it, yet the whole world knows that they are close to TB Joshua, it has no benefit.
It is no big deal. Except they obey the counsel given to them, it has no benefit. It is not something to be proud of. At least, seven presidents have visited this place since inception. But each time presidents come to this place, I get query from God. When they come around, you won’t have time to attend to other people. They will block the road with their security and at the end of the day, they won’t do what you advise them to do.

On allegations that his generosity is what woos people to the church: How much will I give to the president of a nation to come here? Even when they come, I don’t get any financial gain but I incur cost because I want to ensure that they are well cared for. That is all; I even prefer to spend my time with the poor than to be with the presidents.
If a president visits this place today, the whole of the day will be devoted to that visit, I would have lesser time for the poor people, who need my attention. God has been warning me over this trend so much that when some presidents said that they wanted to visit me, I said no. I said it would be better for me to visit them in their countries. Each time they visit this place, I receive query from God because of my time that should have been used to attend to the poor and the needy that are waiting for me.
One soul is not superior to the other, why should I continue to receive query? Really out of three presidents that may visit, there will hardly be one that will show good example of the counsel that they received from me. If the needy are more receptive to God, it is better to give them more of my time.

Why he still asks people to display the items given to them live on camera: We do so to encourage other people to do likewise. Some of them are physically-challenged or indigent people who do not even have bank accounts, so we have to give them cash. We don’t want them to be duped, but we don’t do that often anymore.
It is not a deliberate advertising.
Every man of God has his own habit. Habit is a gift from God. Like Daniel, whenever he wants to pray, he will open his window, that is his habit. The disciples of Jesus prayed six times a day; that is their habit. It is not that we are showing off. When people see what we are doing, they learn how to be good givers.
If you do everything privately, what will people write about? Jesus fed the 5,000 people in the open, not in secret. That is why it could be written. When the tax collectors came to him, he did not hide to say, ‘I don’t want them to see that they want to collect money from me.’ Even when he healed a man and they asked him how he did it, he asked them to go and ask the healed man.

On how God speaks to him: Faith must first be in the heart before there could be an accepted confession. That means faith must first be in the heart before there could be an acceptance of prayer, request, talk from God. Faith is of man’s heart, which is spirit. Heart literarily means a different thing from the spirit. You use your faith to put a demand.
I use my faith to place a demand. You don’t understand what I am saying. Let me put it this way, faith is a channel through which the anointing flows. That means you use your faith to put a demand and ask for whatever you want. If there is faith in your heart, you can close your eyes and make a demand that you want to know what is happening around the world and before you know it, you will see the vision.
There is what you call a measure of faith – deep, deeper, deepest faith. I don’t know which level you belong. Faith grows as we hear the word and obey it. We are not all at the same level, but all things are possible to him that believes. What is possible for you may not be possible for me.

On people believing he is not a follower of Jesus Christ, but a member of some other sect: We don’t get power, it is faith we have. The power in our life is released by faith through our mouth. The issue of getting power is wrong. We don’t talk about getting power here. If you don’t have faith, power will remain dormant. In Mark, Jesus said this kind won’t be possible but by prayer and fasting. The disciples had power but lacked faith to release it.
Nigerians cannot tell me who I am. The percentage of my people around the world is more than those in Nigeria. I am celebrated around the world. Go on the internet, Emmanuel TV is the most watched. Forget about anybody, I don’t need to promote myself. Even Jesus could not win everybody’s soul.
The word Christian is a title. How do you know that those people talking believe in Jesus Christ when Christianity is a matter of the heart?
That is what I am correcting you about; that someone said he is a Christian doesn’t mean he is. If somebody says he belongs to this or that fellowship, only God knows. It is not about confessing that I am a prophet, a pastor, only God knows who is serving him. A mango tree cannot bear coconut. What you believe radiates around you. I’m more than that kind of confession. If anyone doesn’t believe me, they would when the time comes.
Christianity is not an association. Let us talk about Christianity. I don’t celebrate religion. I am a follower of Jesus; I am a Christian, that is all I know. I will invite you to come and worship here this Sunday. I am known by my love, not by my association, so whether Pentecostal, Catholic, Charismatic, Methodist, who is serving God? I don’t judge people but people can judge me. All I know is that my persecution has been a blessing; I have been tamed by it. It has strengthened me. I am a Charismatic.
I have told you about faith. You know that Elijah anointed Elisha, but can you tell me who anointed Elijah? So you see God can choose to do it the way He wants. Because I don’t want to hurt you, I don’t know which circle you belong to, maybe your own pastor was anointed by a man.

On Jim Iyke: Oh please, don’t drag me into that. All I can say is that if a person needs to see a doctor, he should be free to do so. I like the young man. He has been defending himself on the internet. Is he not enjoying a better life now? Are things not working for him?

On his family members: I don’t expose my family. I hear people saying that I don’t have a wife and that I have no child. That is the news everywhere. You have seen my wife, and this is a photograph of my daughter.
My wife is a very wonderful woman. She believes in receiving her own call. She does not just want to hold microphone because her husband is a pastor.
Men of God need to take care of their children. My daughter studied Law she is doing her PhD in Harvard and she is coming back home to preach the gospel. She loves to preach.

On his looks and if his wife is responsible: I love to look good, too; it is 50-50 anyway. She has been a great woman to me. She has been a great source of encouragement in the midst of my challenges. She is different in the sense that she said I was the one God called, so she is waiting until she is called by God to be a pastor. That is unlike what most men of God do, they believe that once they are called, their wives must be pastors too.

On when he is going to buy his own private jet: When one is at the airport to catch a flight, you see that many have become like Molue. They could disappoint you by saying the flight has been cancelled. Even when you eventually get on board, people keep thronging you for one reason or the other. The person serving you the meal may be someone that needs deliverance, by giving you food, she will deliver you.
There was an experience I had when travelling by air for a trip of about nine hours. I was pressed but couldn’t go and ease myself because I had to queue like other people before I could use the restroom. Besides, I thought that some of those people could go to the toilet immediately after I had used it in expression of faith, so I remained glued to my seat all through the journey. That would not have been if I was flying a private jet.
Or if you are a man of God that snores and they see the pastor sleeping and snoring, they will think he shouldn’t snore. Meanwhile, he is human. So a man of God should have a private jet if the situation demands it.
If the use is for the church, the church should buy it, own it and manage it. It should not be bought in the pastor’s name. When he is no longer there, the jet remains the church’s.

On what inspired him to owning a football club: It is the desire to help people realise their dreams. There are other social platforms that we use to help people.

Is God not too busy to talk to him about that? The same God speaks about everything. God is aware of everything. It is all about the faith that you have; it manifests even in small things. We need to know how much we need God.

December 2013 is finally here, guys and we have every cause to celebrate.
God has been faithful, very loving and so kind.
A lot of people started the year with us, but they are no more today.
But God kept us, and our loved ones by his grace and infinite mercy.
Yes, sometimes we had huge, big problems.
He gave us the strength to bear it, resources to overcome and succeed.
Now that the year is coming to end, let's not lose hope if we still have a lot of unaccomplished goals.
Nobody can go back now and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.
dearie, please make this month that month you pursue  with all your heart, body and mind,  all the dreams
that you have.
Take a step forward today towards your goals in life.
It is never easy to face your fears, self-doubts and gain the confidence to pursue your dreams.
But it is harder, much more painful to look back tomorrow and regret about things you could have done to make your life successful but didn't do when you had the chance.
It's been a long, eventful year for all of us, but God's name be praised, we are all here together to celebrate a new month, the last month of the year.
Let's pray for happiness, love, peace of mind.
I wish you everything you wish yourself, all the good things you deserve, may all your good prayers come true.
When your body and mind is faint and you feel like giving up, I hope you find strength inside of you to keep holding on.
Never ever take yourself for granted, and here, cheers to the new month, guys.

No more drama: American singer, Mary J. Blige gave up alcohol after Whitney Houston’s death

mary-j-blige

Award-winning American singer and actress, Mary J. Blidge revealed recently that the death of her close friend, Whitney Houston shocked her and led to her decision to give up alcohol.
The star said Houston’s death in February 2012 had a major effect on her and she began to think about her mortality. She also quit drinking in an attempt to improve her health.
She said: ‘I was at her funeral [and] being that close to someone you loved so dearly, in a coffin, it freaked me out. It made me realise the importance of my own life. ’I didn’t stop overnight, it was a process. I feel great right now. I have more clarity, more focus, more patience. And I lost weight. When you stop drinking it flies off!’
Blidge, 42, said she will even abstain from toasting her husband, Kendu Isaacs with a glass of champagne next year when they celebrate their 10-year-anniversary. She told The Guardian newspaper: ‘I’ll have a glass of ginger ale. Ginger ale and Diet Coke are my drinks.’
The Grammy Award winner, who was faced with a $3.4 million tax lien earlier this year, says there are
always challenges in life, but she has learned to deal with whatever may comes her way.
She explained:‘There’s always drama, but you have to learn to navigate your way through it. Life is full of trials and tribulations, but I know now how to get out of it. You have to make a decision to say ‘no more’.’

Dividend of democracy? Gov. Aregbesola approves 13th month salary for workers in Osun State

Gov. Rauf Aregbesola

Osun governor, Rauf Aregbesola, on Friday, November 29, approved the payment of 100 percent 13th month basic salary to workers in the state.
Aregbesola made this announcement in Osogbo, the state capital, while distributing loans for vehicle refurbishing to public workers.
According to the governor, no previous administration had ever paid workers 100 percent 13th month salary.
Premium Times report:
He assured that his administration would continue to put smiles on the faces of workers, adding that he would live up to his electioneering campaign promises.
“We have virtually touched every sector of the society in our bid to live by our words. We have touched every sphere significantly in pursuance of our Six-point Integral Action Plan. What we are doing today is spectacular and unusual again. It is unprecedented to
give vehicle refurbishing loans to many beneficiaries.
“It is our desire to ensure that our workers, both at the state and local government levels, are given the best so that we can work together to get the dividends of democracy”, he said.
No fewer than 9,435 workers were listed as beneficiaries of the loan, a development which the labour leaders described as first in the history of the state.
Francis Adetunji, Chairman of Trade Union Congress; Bayo Adejumo, Chairman, Joint Negotiation Council; and Saka Adesiyan, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, lauded  Aregbesola for the gesture.

Why I was arrested in Benin Republic – Asari Dokubo opens up

Asari-Dokubo-at-the-venue

Niger Delta activist, Mujahid Dokubo-Asari said he was arrested by the  Beninoise police over an allegation that he was that he was a member of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram.
He also said the allegation of being a member of the terrorist group was made from Nigeria.
Dokubo-Asari, however, attributed his arrest in Benin as the handiwork of those opposed  to the 2015 re-election ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan.
According to The Punch:
The NDPVF boss who appeared unperturbed by the arrest also said the crises “has raised my profile in that country.”
Speaking with Journalists on Friday night during his arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja he also described as lies, reports that President Jonathan sent a Presidential Jet to fly him into Nigeria from the Republic of Benin.
He said, “Crisis is normal, it can also happen here in Nigeria, it can happen anywhere in the world. The people and government of Republic of Benin have no problem with me. But if
people alleged that somebody is a leader of Boko Haram, the government of that country will investigate the person.
“The allegation has much to do with 2015 because when your read comments on social media, you find out that somebody who is against President Goodluck Jonathan, said they should vilify me and make sure I die before 2015. But they are not going to succeed. I am not going to die. I will be present in 2015, and I will do what I am going to do to ensure that Jonathan wins in 2015. There is nothing they can do about it. This is their last fight and it is so unfortunate that the way and manner they are going with it shows how immature they are.”
He also denied that he was flown into Abuja in a Presidential Jet saying it is not true.
Asari said, “I just arrived from Cotonu. I drove in my car from Cotonu to Lagos Airport where I boarded Aero Contractors flight to Abuja. The report is not true. No presidential jet was sent to me.
“That report is an instigated falsehood. Most of the things that have always been written against President Goodluck Jonathan is also falsehood. A section of the press in Nigeria is manipulated and instigated.”
“I do business in Cotonu, and I have been living in Cotonu since 2008. Politically, people who are in Nigeria are trying to fabricate lies, which are not verifiable, and send it to the government of Republic of Benin. So I was taken for interrogation and they found that the allegations were false, and I was promptly released with over 20 of my staff who were also taken in.”
Asari also spoke on his meeting with officials of government of Republic of Benin after his interrogation.
“I have met with the top and powerful people in Republic of Benin, since I went to that country. I have never had any reason to meet with their government officials, but this crisis has made it possible for me to meet with all the top government functionaries of the Republic of Benin. The crises has raised my profile in that country”, he boasted.

ASUU STRIKE: We Didn’t Give ASUU Ultimatum – President Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has weekend, said his government did not give the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, an ultimatum to resume work or be sacked.
Fielding questions from newsmen at the expanded caucus meeting of the Bayelsa State Peoples Democratic Party held at Government House, Yenagoa, the President said, the Supervising Minister of Education only passed on the decision of the Committee of Vice Chancellors.
“We didn’t give them ultimatum; it was the Committee of Vice Chancellors that took that decision. The Supervising Minister of Education only passed on the decision.”
Jonathan also said the strike embarked upon by the ASUU was no longer a trade dispute , but a subversive action.
He said, “What ASUU is doing is no longer trade union. I have intervened in other labour issues before now, once I invite them they respond and after the meeting they take decision and call off the strike.

“At times we don’t even give them a long notice, unlike, in the case of ASUU that was given four days notice before the meeting. As you are meeting to resolve trade disputes, you expect the trade unions to get their officials ready.
“What was expected having met with the highest authorities in the land for long hours, was for ASUU to immediately issue statement within 12 or latest 24 hours , to state their position whether they were accepting government’s offer or not. And if they are not accepting they should state the reason for that.”
“But despite the fact that I had the longest meeting with ASUU in my political history, we did not start that meeting until around 2:00pm and the meeting ended the next day in the early hours. As far as the government of Nigeria was concerned, all the critical people that should be in a meeting were there, so what else do they want?
“After that they didn’t meet until one week, despite the fact that you met with the highest authority. It was unfortunate one of them, Prof. Iyayi died.
“The way ASUU has conducted the matter shows they are extreme and when Iyayi died, they now said the strike was now indefinite, our children have been at home for over five months.”

“I am Too Busy Making Money” – Empress Njamah responds to Timaya’s “Negative” Comments

Timaya & Empress Njamah - November 2013 - BellaNaija

Empress Njamah isn’t one to publicly throw shade at her former partner.
If you were expecting the Nollywood actress to give her own robust reply after music star Timaya said she “has a negative record”, you’ll be disappointed.

Punch recently contacted the actress to speak on Timaya’s comments. In the phone conversation, she revealed “People who are mature can depict what is true and what is not. I am not ready to say anything.”
On if the comment bothers her: “Why would it bother me? It is one thing to be hurt over such statement and another thing to be disappointed. I wasn’t hurt and I wasn’t even disappointed. Worst things have been said and written about me but the people who know who I am would tell the difference.”
She also revealed that she is more interested in her life at the moment rather than talking about “what doesn’t
make sense”.
“I am more involved with my birthday and celebrating it with the orphans and the less privileged. I am better off talking about this than to talk about what is not important. I am too busy making money. People who know you will always know how positive you have affected their lives. I am surrounded by so many people who have shown me love so there is no reason for me to be pained.”
“Too busy making money” Yikes! Empress sure knows how to reply statements.

ASUU/FG SHOWDOWN: Why Jonathan Decided To Come Down Hard On ASUU

Leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday moved from Abuja to their respective campuses expecting crackdown, as the Federal Government has issued several threats.

President Goodluck Jonathan might no longer be directly involved in negotiation with the lecturers: he is angry for the ASUU leaders' contempt for the office of the President, their decision to issue new conditions and their being allegedly backed by some external forces.
After spending almost a week in Abuja in hopes of resuming talks, the ASUU leaders were eventually left with no other option but to go back to their campuses.
A top leader of ASUU said on conditions of anonymity: "Our leaders have returned to their campuses. They were disappointed with the Area Boy or Agbero method adopted by the Minister.
"The military style of the Minister of State for Education will only compound the situation.
"So, we are back to our trenches as it was the situation during the military era. We are ready for the worst
now. If the situation becomes uncontrollable, we will also go underground and resort to guerilla tactics."
Meanwhile, a source within the Federal Government said: "We hope that they will not overreach their bounds, because what they have done in the last four months amounted to economic sabotage.
"If they continue to take the law into their hands by paralysing activities in the universities, we may try them for economic sabotage. This is also the extreme end the government may go too.
"Let them study the enabling laws to see what they have been violating. We are not yet disposed to wielding the big stick, but if the government is pushed to the wall, it will invoke relevant laws to manage the situation. We are waiting for what they will do."
A different source added: “"ll the security agencies have been directed to protect lives and property on all the campuses nationwide, especially in the universities that have reopened.
"Union leaders are also under watch to prevent recourse to self-help, which may lead to wanton destruction of property.
"The government will not tolerate any intimidation or harassment, and any violent union leader risks being arrested. But those who restrict themselves to the confines of the law have nothing to fear."
On Jonathan's position, a government source said: "We are trying to insulate the Office of the President from further negotiation with ASUU if at all the union will allow such or there will be room for such.
"We think relevant ministers and the Committee of Pro-Chancellors/Vice-Chancellors should be able to handle the rest of the talks/negotiation."
According to investigation, the December 4, 2013 ultimatum given by the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, followed the directive of the Presidency.
The government source added: "The President is angry because he over-indulged ASUU leaders. It is only in Nigeria you see the President sitting for 13 hours with union leaders on any issue and at the end of the day, there will be no courtesy from the union.
"While the President was expecting feedback from ASUU leaders within 72 hours, they kept him in suspense for two weeks or more.
"And instead of feedback on where the talks stopped, ASUU leaders came up with fresh conditions when even during the negotiation, they admitted that some of the clauses in 2009 agreement cannot be implemented.
"The President is human. He now has every cause to believe that the strike action seems to have the backing of external forces seeking to bring his administration down. That was why he decided to come down hard on ASUU, too."

VIDEO-INQUIRY: Kano State's Sharia Vice Squad Targets Lesbians, Prostitutes, Sagged Clothings.....

photo - VIDEO-INQUIRY: Nigeria's Sharia Vice Squad Targets Lesbians, Prostitutes

Kano State - As enforcers of Islamic Sharia law in northern Nigeria, it is their job to gather evidence of un-Islamic behaviour -- and respond.
Six men in green uniform stand in the back of a pick-up truck in northern Nigeria's biggest city, on the look-out for prostitutes, their clients, transvestites, drunks and drug addicts. Their patrols in Kano also scout for men and women deemed to be dressed indecently, examples of supposedly "immoral" behaviour and even Western-style haircuts they consider violations of Islamic law, known as sharia.
"Once we receive an intelligence report or a tip-off of an immoral act being committed in a particular place, we mobilise our men to the area and put an end to it and arrest the perpetrators for either counselling or prosecution," Adamu Haruna Bayero, who heads the patrol, told AFP.
Scroll down to watch the video
A tip-off is received that there might be a prostitute in the area, and the chase is on. A girl is apprehended, suspected of prostitution, and taken back to base for further questioning. In this majority Muslim state, it's the job of the Hisbah to resolve disputes and preach sharia law - rather than detain or punish Serious criminal
offences they refer to the police and the courts.
Back at base, another two suspected prostitutes have been questioned and cautioned. One of them says, "They have counselled me and told me to go back to my parents, even if that just means doing menial housework."
This time they were let off, promising to change their ways, hoping never again to find themselves on the wrong side of the Hisbah.
In recent weeks, the sharia enforcers, or Hisbah, have launched sweeping crackdowns and made hundreds of arrests in Kano following a state-government directive to cleanse the commercial hub of so-called immoral practices. Often their raids coincide with religious festivals, when the boundaries of what is considered decent are pushed to the limit, particularly among the city's youth.
But others suspect a political motive after rivals of the governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, accused him of lacklustre support for sharia, which is in place across northern Nigeria and coexists with secular, state law.

'Balotelli haircuts'
The 9,000-strong moral police force in Kano was formed in 2001 but has since assumed other duties, such as community development work and alternative dispute resolution. Since its creation, its supporters say it has become an essential part of daily life, tackling issues such as high levels of drug addiction and prostitution, problems that have festered amid unemployment rates that are the worst in the country.
"Some areas you can go and see people romancing on the road," said Haruna as he patrolled the city, occasionally making phone calls to Hisbah intelligence operatives giving him the location of the next raid. In Kano's market, many support the Hisbah's actions.
"Our youth wear tight trousers and they pull them down from their waist," one man said. "They also have a type of haircut like footballer (Mario) Balotelli or the (Zinedine) Zidane cut. There are so many of them."
At night, the Hisbah shines its torches into brothels and motorised rickshaws -- a key means of transport in the city -- to determine whether young men and women are using them for canoodling and cavorting.
The group's raids have extended to red-light districts in the mainly Christian Sabon Gari part of the city, prompting claims of persecution by the minority community. Religion is a volatile subject in Nigeria, which is roughly divided into a mainly Muslim north and largely Christian south, and where extremist group Boko Haram is waging a deadly insurgency to carve out a hardline Islamic state.
But the Hisbah insists that its policing targets all faiths. "Those arrested include Muslims and non-Muslims and we treat them equally because this is about morality," said Hisbah spokesman Mohammed Yusuf Yola.
The group's deputy commander general, Nabahani Usman, said those arrested for a first and second offence are typically counselled. Repeat offenders are taken to court, leading to a fine or even a jail term.
The group's actions may seem extreme but the Hisbah says the sanctions provided in law are not enough of a deterrent.
Offenders from a recent raid were given the option of a two-month jail term or fine ranging from 10,000 naira to 15,000 naira. Most paid the fines to escape prison.

'Lesbians in our Internet'
For Usman, a lack of parental control and family values due to high divorce rates and poverty in the city are to blame for the rising tide of what he considers immoral behaviour.
Some 400 factories in Kano have shut over the past two decades, damaging Kano's economy and leaving many families impoverished. With parents unable to educate their children properly, many turn to crime and drugs, he said. Foreign culture is also creeping in from satellite television and the Internet, he added.
"We have recently discovered that there is a lesbian group -- Kano lesbian group -- in our Internet, which is a very unfortunate situation," he said.
Usman accepts that the Hisbah has limited powers and capacity to police the Internet or the airwaves. As a result, he said, the group is attempting to enforce compliance with sharia by preaching to preserve Kano's culture and traditions. "That is why we in the Hisbah mobilise our men to every nook and corner, just to preach to them that unless our society is cleansed of all these kinds of things we will not know where we will find ourselves in the near future," he said.

Really, Really Weird Animals (SEE AMAZING PHOTOS)

The animal world is amazing. Discover some species you have probable never heard about:

1. Red-lipped Batfish
Photo: Red-lipped Batfish
It's a fish that can be found on the Galapagos Islands. Red-lipped Batfish is actually a pretty bad swimmer, and uses its pectoral fins to walk on the bottom of the ocean.

2. Goblin Shark

Photo: Goblin Shark
This is a very rare shark, the only extant representative of the family Mitsukurinidae, a lineage some 125 million years old. Given the depths at which it lives, the goblin shark poses no danger to humans.

3. The Panda Ant
Photo: The Panda Ant
The Mutillidae are a family of more than 3,000 species of wasps (despite the names) whose wingless females resemble large, hairy ants. Found in Chile, they are known for their extremely painful stings. Black and white specimens are sometimes known as panda ants due to their hair coloration resembling that of the Chinese giant panda.

4. Penis Snake
Photo: Penis Snake
Photo: Penis Snake
In the language of science this eyeless animal is actually called Atretochoana eiselti. It is a large, presumably aquatic, caecilian amphibian with a broad, flat head and a fleshy dorsal fin on the body.

5. Umbonia Spinosa
Photo: Umbonia Spinosa
These thorn bugs use their beaks to pierce plant stems to feed upon their sap. Their weird appearance still poses many questions to scientists.

6. Glaucus Atlanticus

Otherwise called blue dragon, this animal is a is a species of blue sea slug. You could find it in warm waters of the oceans, as it floats on the surface because of a gas-filled sac in its stomach.

7. Mantis Shrimp
Photo: Mantis Shrimp
Also called the “sea locusts“, “prawn killers” and even “thumb splitters”, this is one of the most common predators in tropical and sub-tropical waters; little is known about them, however, because of how much time they spend hiding in their burrows.

8. Giant Isopod
 Photo: Giant Isopod

The largest existing isopod. The enormous size of the giant isopod is a result of a phenomenon known as deep sea gigantism. This is the tendency of deep sea crustaceans and other animals to grow to a much larger size than similar species in shallower waters.

Lagos suspends principal of school where pupils sit on windows

A story on the dearth of good furniture in Ikeja Grammar School, Lagos, published by Saturday PUNCH last Saturday drew a wrong chord with the Lagos State Government.
Last Monday, it suspended the school principal for allowing this writer to gain access to the school premises and take photographs of classes where pupils sat on windows and concrete blocks while learning.
Even though it was reported in the story titled, “Lagos school where pupils learn sitting on windows, concrete blocks” that the principal was not around when this journalist visited the school, It was learnt that her superiors have decided to hang the blame of the scandal on her.
Efforts to speak to the principal as the news of her suspension broke on Monday, were unsuccessful as she was nowhere to be found in the school. Teachers are not allowed to speak with the press in the state.
But an irked teacher, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the principal was removed from her position as a punishment on Monday.
The teacher said, “This is more serious than you think; you have put this school in trouble. The education
‘oga’ (commissioner) and other state officials summoned the principal on Monday and she has been removed from her position.
“She was asked to start reporting to the office of the permanent secretary of the ministry of education as from Tuesday.”
Our correspondent, who paid an undercover visit to the school on Monday, noticed that the issue had put all the teachers in the school on edge as many of them were seen holding copies of the published report.
It was also learnt that the state government’s education top officials had gone a step further by querying a teacher who was teaching a class when photographs of an array of broken furniture the pupils sat on were taken.
Our source within the school said another teacher, a head of department, is also facing the ministry’s ‘fire’ in connection to the said publication. The Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, had last week Friday admitted that her ministry was aware of the issue of the bad furniture in the school.
“Thank you for your observation; we are not unaware. As I write, chairs are being supplied and before too long, it will go round the schools,” a text message from her said on Friday. But by Monday when this correspondent visited the school, no new chairs had been supplied.
This correspondent got in touch with the Lagos State Chairman of the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools, Mr. Babatunde Philips, to find out if the state of furniture in secondary schools in the state had been a subject of discussion in the conference’s deliberations in the past.
But Phillips said he could not comment on the issue at the time.
“I heard about the suspension of the principal (of Ikeja Grammar School). It makes me very sad that she had to be suspended. But we are planning to make our findings about the issue. I cannot say anything about the issue right now,” he said.
The state government’s action after last Saturday’s publication seems to have become a trend in the way it handles issues relating to its responsibilities.
In August 2013, after Saturday PUNCH published a report on the state of an orphanage located beside a house owned by the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Orelope Adejoke-Adefulire, operated by Mrs. Rose Nwachukwu, the state government closed down the orphanage and arrested the woman even though experts said officials should have monitored the orphanage’s activities in the first place.
When a text message was sent to Oladunjoye on Thursday on the report that the principal was suspended, Oladunjoye replied simply, “Which report is that please? I know a report is already in the public domain.”

The decision to present a Christian candidate emerged after due consultations with eminent Christian leaders and clerics who have promised to mobilise other faithfuls to vote enmasse for the party if a Christian emerges as gubernatorial candidate in the state. The leadership of the APC, after a thorough search, have found a willing and reliable Christian candidate in Ayo Gbeleyi, a thoroughbred professional known for his exceptional brilliance and intelligence.

Since the searchlight has beamed on Gbeleyi, Christian leaders are delighted that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has not only heeded to their demands but responded accordingly. They had argued that Moslems have successively governed the state since the inception of democracy. It is just fair and equitable to allow a Christian to govern Lagos, given the fact that successive governors of the state since 1999 that democracy returned have been Moslems. Besides, they argued that the three Senatorial seats are occupied by Moslems. The call for a Christian governor, observers of politics in the state reasoned is not to ignite any religious crisis but to ensure balance and equity.

Observers opined that the efforts of successive administrations in the state in areas of governance, accountability and reliability are not and should not be exclusive of faith or religion.

A thoroughbred candidate like Gbeleyi, they posited, is equally suitable for the exalted post. With his pedigree and insights in public service, finance, procurement, construction, project management, etc, he is, no doubt, a round peg in a round hole. It could be recalled that he single-handedly planned and made a major breakthrough with his well-thoughout Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative in Lagos. While he served as the Director-General of the parastatal, he also doubled as the Senior Adviser to the Executive Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola on the project.

Over time, his visionary leadership amid pressure, necessity and even adversity on several projects in his purview yielded unprecedented positivity and growth that sooner than ever, Lagos becomes an envy spot in PPP. Commendable is his ability to work seamlessly with the Ministries Department Agencies (MDAs) to realise and institutionalise Lagos of our dream and the government strides to make the state a Megacity is achieved.

The beauty and elegance we see in the services of the Bus Rapid Transit, (BRT), Lekki-Epe Toll Concession, the Independent Power Plant, Oluwole and Tejuoso Market Developments, Adeniran Ogunsanya Ultra Modern Shopping and Retail Commercial Centres are some of the lofty ideas he has shared and executed with the support of the purposeful leadership in the saddle of governance in the state.

Asiwaju Tinubu, after wide consultations with all interest groups and political blocs in the state, is optimistic that Gbeleyi with his background can effortlessly manage the internally generated revenue of over N18billion of the state and continue in the stride of previous governments to make Lagos an enviable commercial base.
It takes a visionary leader to fish out a promising successor.

Asiwaju, from all ramifications have proven that he knows one when he sees one. His ability and confidence in his choice of BRF as his successor has proven his insightful leadership. He will not go wrong with Ayo Gbeleyi.

According to reliable sources, Gbeleyi, in readiness for the task ahead, has not only received the nod of top ans formidable stakeholders in politics, he has built a financial war chest to prosecute his electionering campaign. His readiness from all fronts, our sources hinted, gives Asiwaju a strong conviction that he is the man for the job and other contenders are pretenders. He has also built a formidable media team to actualise his dream.

For Gbeleyi, it has been a calculated rise to the top. His recent appointment on the recommendation of his immediate past boss, the former Finance Commissioner, Hon. Tokunbo Abiru, the express approval by the Executive Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola and the state's Assembly speak volume of his character and disposition towards public service.

With his record of service, wisdom and support from all stakeholders and the people of Lagos State, Hon. Ayo Gbeleyi is poised to steer the ship of the state to greater heights.

Wole Olabanji: When the Oga at the top says “Go and die!”

There is a popular faith inspiring song that folks sing in church where the song leader asks the congregation; “who has the final say” to which they enthusiastically chorus, “Jehovah has the final say”.

It appears though, going by the body language, and many times the actual spoken words of Nigerian ‘leaders’, a deal may have been reached with ‘Jehovah’ to surrender jurisdiction and hand over the final say over Nigerians to their ‘leaders’.

I suspect that this might have been what that kind man, Mr Shem Obafaye of the #OgaAtTheTop fame was trying to communicate to us a few months ago. Apparently, he must have stumbled on some video where this deal was reached and he therefore knew there was no point for a mere underling to say anything substantive seeing as the right to the final say has been irrevocably ceded to some #OgaAtTheTop.

Unfortunately, while we succeeded in having a national carnival at his expense as the gaffe went viral and became an internet, fashion and even sermon meme, we failed to realize that what he had so cheaply handed us was a fundamental philosophical summation of the Nigerian situation: a universal prefix that can be put before some of the famous statements that Nigerian ‘leaders’ have the uncanny ability to utter.

While going by Nigerian standards of leadership, I would put the ‘dear comrade’ in the top 5 percentile of public officers, it will still require a certain level of grace (I mean graciousness) to simply ascribe to human imperfection his instruction to that widow to “go and die”. Why do Nigerian public officers feel they have received license to talk to citizens and tax payers as though they were talking to purchased slaves?

I of course expect the token outrage on social media; somehow, we Nigerians and our public officials have worked out a fine balance with everyone doing his bit. Rather than anyone doing anything as drastic and irrational as resign over the collapse of the roof of a shopping mall as the Latvian Prime Minister just did, it is sufficient here to offer the usual sound bites about “leaving no stone unturned” etcetera etcetera. If on the other hand someone puts his foot in the mouth, the citizens do the reasonable thing by making some noise for a few days and things are good again between us and them till another disaster or another gaffe.

Not being particularly interested in upsetting that fine balance myself, I say let’s play merge the memes. Here’s my top 5 list. You can add yours afterwards. If you put it on a T-shirt and it sells, remember to send my cheque.

At Synagogue, God Has Been Using Our Critics As Our Advertisement - Prophet TB Joshua

Prophet Temitope Balogun Joshua of the Synagogue Church of all Nations, in a new interview with Punch, spoke about his church and how he handles his 'haters'.
Excerpts:
  • Why is it that your ministry seems to be more popular outside Nigeria than in Nigeria?
As it is written in the Bible, a prophet has no honour in his country. If my people had understood the work from the beginning, it could have affected the glory of God in my life today.
I may not be accepted by some people in Nigeria but my acceptance in the world has been announcing me to my world. When you look at the people working with me, you see that the ratio of Nigerians working with me are not more than 10 per cent.
Sometimes when I see some ministries printing handbills, using signboards to advertise their church, I say those things are not necessary. God is the one inviting people, if you allow him to do it, the solution to their problems will be waiting for them.
At synagogue, our critics are our advertisement.
Some put on dark glasses or disguise in a way that will not allow people that know them to recognize them.
Some say, ‘I wish I had known this, my mum would not have died. She asked me to bring her here but because of what I was hearing about this place, I refused until she died. I hope that she will forgive me.”’
